What is Meta? Meta describes itself as a company that builds technologies that help people connect and find communities, as well as grow businesses. Meta has been marketing itself as a social technology company, offering services like virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and Smart Glasses, the latter is the latest endeavour it’s waded into.

What does'meta' mean on Facebook?

In Portuguese and Spanish, it means “goal.” In Hebrew, the word means “died,” referring to a woman. More problematically, when used in Brazil — Facebook’s fourth largest market — meta can have a sexual connotation.

Is meta a big tech company?

Meta is the parent company of several subsidiaries, including Facebook, Facebook Watch, Facebook Portal, Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp. It ranks amongst the Big Five tech giants as one of the highest-grossing tech multinationals globally. In 2021, Meta acquired other digital platforms, including Giphy, Kustomer, Mapillary, and Oculus.

Meta derives about 55% of its revenue from outside the U.S. and Canada. Facebook/Meta went public on May 18, 2012. Meta Platforms changed its ticker from FB to META on June 9, 2022.
